With summer coming, we all need to remember and to spread the word, No Hot Pets!
In 10 minutes the inside of a car goes up to 109! And in 20 minutes it goes up to 119! Now this is when it’s 90 outside. But even when it’s cooler than that, the inside of a car gets very hot, very quickly. It can become deadly for a pet!
NoHotPets is a campaign urging people not to leave their pets in their cars! If you’d like to help with this, go to NoHotPets and see what you can do. There’s so many things!
You can even print off a NoHotPets window decal for your car. This campaign was started by the Ontario SPCA. It needs to spread all over the U.S. I think some people just don’t realize how dangerous it is to leave their pets in the car. Dogs have a limited ability to sweat; even a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening. A dog’s normal body temperature is about 39°C (100 F) and a temperature of 41°C can be withstood only for a very short time before irreparable brain damage or even death can occur. That’s only 3 degress higher!
If you’re going to be out of your car, just leave them at home. Sometimes we just have to do what’s best to keep them safe, even though they want to go with us. Leaving a pet in the car is one of the most irresponsible things a person can do. And they could face charges!
If your pet does act overheated,(excessive panting and drooling, listlessness or unconsciousness), take them to the vet immediately! In the meantime, wet them with lukewarm water, not cold. Then try to get them to drink some water.
