Finding the right breed of dog for your family is crucial.
You have to consider other pets, if you have them, children’s ages and the size of your yard and house.
Doing a lot of research on breeds can keep you from getting a dog, then having to return him/her. That would be bad for your family and the dog, too.
Some dogs need more exercise, so you have to be willing to walk them every day. And it would be best if you have a big yard for them to play in. And then others, don’t mind so much if they don’t get out and walk a lot.
Some dogs need a lot of grooming, either by you or a professional. Big dogs take up a lot of space, they need big toys and bones to chew on, so they don’t chew up your furniture.
And then you always have to consider allergies, if anyone in your family has them. I know Yorkies are fine for people with allergies. They have hair, not fur.
Of course the best thing to do is adopt a dog from your local shelter. In a lot, if not most, states have rescue groups, too. Like if you want a sheltie, search, “sheltie rescue”. Saving a dog’s life is one of the best things you can do! So many shelters are over-crowded, therefore they have to do what they have to do, I guess! I can’t stand that thought!
You can go to this Dog Breed Selector for help on picking the right breed.

Very awesome tool! I have always adopted my pets, and probably will for the rest of my life! I think it is best to do your research about the breed of dog you plan on getting well in advance!
I had never had anything but large dog breeds before and thought little dogs were too mean and yappy. I now am the proud owner of two amazing Chihuahuas and couldn’t be happier. I think I would be lost without them!

You are so right. People tend to look at what breed is trendy without thinking about how the dog will fit into their lifestyle. Found you through Bloggy Moms.
I love all 5 of my dogs…some of them found me and I found some of them. I think that finding a dog that is a good fit for your family is very important, for you and for the sweet dog.
I did the dog selector and it was interesting and fun! Love all the photos of the dogs!
what a great tool! And I agree. Not all breeds are perfect for everyone. Especially if you have kids, you want to make sure you get one that is not to touchy! Also researching that breed is good to!
