I was so excited when I was offered the chance to review IndieFlix. The documentary I’m reviewing, goes right along with my #BullyingSeries. It’s amazing to see what these two girls did and how they are helping so many kids.
“Finding Kind” is a documentary about girls bullying girls. In February, 2009, two girls, now women, traveled around the country, talking to kids of all ages. You’ll see everyone they talked to has been involved in bullying in one way or another. These two girls make an amazing impact and have helped so many kids.
Filmmakers Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson, set out on a cross-country, six week, journey. What they find amazes and educates even them. They met while going to the same University, Pepperdine. They found they had a lot in common and wanted to change the world. Along the way they talk to women and girls about their lives and experiences. While talking to them about their own unique personal stories, they find a lot of universal truths about growing up.
They document their journey, hence the film, Finding Kind. They take the personal experiences and find a common ground of kindness and mutual respect. The filmmakers, Parsekian and Thompson, found that people wanted to talk to them about girl on girl bullying. They also interviewed respected experts and authors in the fields of psychology, education and the interrelationships of women and girls.

Lauren Parsekian had her own experience with bullying. Going into 7th grade, she was one of the “popular girls”. Then two of her so-called friends spread a rumor about her. Over the next two years, they spread even more rumors. They threw things at her at lunch, got guys to ask her out, then broke up with her to embarrass her. And they would tear up her homework. They did a lot more hurtful things. It caused her to have depression, which turned into an eating disorder and resulted in her trying to take her own life. She was in the mindset there was no other way out.
But that’s not the case, in Middle School and High School you think that’s your entire world. This campaign shows girls there is more to life than what’s inside the halls of school. There’s so much more to life and things will change!
Molly grew up in Texas, before moving to California to attend the University. When she was in high school, she also experienced being bullied. She was ostracized by a group of girls. She was afraid to answer the phone and go to school. She felt that terrible loneliness. A small few stuck by her, and the year ended a little better, with forgiveness. One of Molly’s passions was always helping people. So when Lauren approached her about doing this documentary, she was all for it.
As they saw how open all the women and girls were about this issue, they couldn’t wait to spread the word. The Kind Campaign came about from all the amazing people they spoke to. This is evidence of the power of female friendship.
On the Kind Campaign site, you can get “kind cards” to apologize or say something nice to another girl. You can start a Kind Club, have an assembly or have a showing of the film, Finding Kind. You can also get the Kind braclets, and t-shirts to help spread the word.
IndieFlix is the only place you can see this documentary. Every person should see this. It’s amazing and so inspiring. I loved watching it. If we could all just come together and understand that all of us just want to feel like we belong.
IndieFlix has a lot of films to choose from. They have “It’s A Treat”, “Grow Up Already” “The Sleuth Incident” and so many more. You can see films here that aren’t playing anywhere else. I love it!
