Did You Have Special Sunday Dinners When You Were A Child?
I loved going to my aunt’s.
They were poor, but she always had a huge dinner on Sundays.
I remember when I was young, about 12 or so, we always used to go to my aunt F’s house for Sunday dinner. Sometimes we went there on Saturday and spent the night. This was my mother’s sister and they were really close. My mom and dad were divorced when I was about 6 and my sister was 6 years older than me. I don’t remember my sister hardly ever going there with us. So I guess she stayed home to be with her friends. Plus she had a job.
Anyway….I loved going there! They had a big family, 6 kids. I loved that, my family was so small. And with my sister being so much older, a lot of times it was just mom and I. They lived in a pretty bad part of town, back then. They didn’t have much money at all and the neighborhood was not too great. But it was a favorite place to go, for me!
This looks a lot like where they lived;
I loved being around a big family. I remember my aunt would have a huge dinner every Sunday. She would make meatload sometimes, with mashed potatoes, dressing, salad, bread and butter, a couple vegetables and I can’t even remember what all. I just remember there was a LOT of food on the table. And everyone sat and ate together. She always made a dessert too, which of course was delicious!
And then we all sat around the table, always talking and joking around and laughing. It was really fun! There were kids my age and some older. I was friends with all of them, really.
I remember one time, a couple of us, walked to the movie theater a few blocks away. I wish I could remember what movie it was. But, anyway, I remember having a great time with my cousins! They went to a Catholic school, so they would always tell me tales of the sisters and how they got their hand slapped with a ruler and different things. I just went to a public school, so it was really different.
Where does the time go? That seems so long ago, yet almost like it was yesterday. I miss some of those days!
We live in a different state now and I don’t see any of them anymore! I wish my kids had family here we could visit and they could experience that! I tell them about things I did as a kid, but it’s not the same, of course. I really wish my mom was still here! There’s so many times when I think, “why didn’t I ask her about that”! (She passed away a few years ago.)
Do you have any Sunday Dinner memories or anything like that?
