St Patrick’s Day Cake – How To Get Over Your Fear Of Fondant
St. Patrick’s Day Fondant Cake
I finally got to making a fondant cake. It’s not decorated a lot after the fondant. I was actually going to decorate it more the next day. But when I got up a few pieces were already gone, so I just left it.
I just wanted to show this and talk about fondant. It’s not as scarey as I thought it would be to use it. Fondant is like play-doh! You can mold any shapes from it. It’s fun, actually. So if you’ve been wanting to use it, you should! I had put it off for a couple months. And now I love it! I see why people use it so much.
So here’s a picture of the one I made.
I just made a two layer cake and put it in the freezer for an hour. Then I put a layer of regular icing on it. After that you need to freeze it again.
To color the fondant just take it out and put some food coloring in it and knead it until it’s the color you want. If you want it to be a darker or solid color it takes a bit of time, but just keep kneading and it’ll happen. To keep all the food coloring off my hands, I put it in a baggie and just kept rubbing it in there. I liked this marble color, so that’s when I stopped.
Then roll out your fondant with powdered sugar underneath it. When it’s about 1/8 – 1/4″ thick, it’s ready.
Hold the rolling pin over the middle of the fondant and fold it back over the rolling pin, then put it over the cake. Push down lightly on the sides until it’s on completely.
Push the bottom over to the cake and then trim off the extra at the bottom.
As I’m sure you can tell, I made that shamrock by hand, just with the fondant. I traced it with a toothpick, lightly, then cut it out.
And that’s it! I’m not scared of fondant anymore! lol
