A StarFish Right On The Beach #BestVacation Spots!

Of all the years we’ve been going to Myrtle beach, among others, on vacations, we’ve never seen a Starfish before!

We were walking along the water after dark with flashlights. All of a sudden I said “Is that a Starfish?” I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was so amazing! My son got his iPhone5 out and took this picture. It turned out really good, considering it was dark out.

 

 

So we kept walking and then saw two more Starfish! It was so awesome to see those. The only thing is, they weren’t alive anymore and we felt bad for them. They looked perfect but we figured the rough waves must have some how killed them. It was sad to see them like that. My son put this one back in the water just in case.

As we kept walking, we also saw several jellyfish on the sand. Of course they weren’t alive either. We had seen those before at night. We just kept wondering why the sea had to kill all these wonderful sea creatures. The moon that night was full and bright. It shines on the ocean and is just amazing!  My son also took this picture. The iPhone5 has an amazing camera! I just framed it in PicMonkey.

 

Did you know that Starfish aren’t really fish? I didn’t. According to the Oceanservice.noaa.gov they live underwater, but that is where their resemblance to fish ends. They do not have gills, scales, or fins. Starfish live only in saltwater. Sea water, instead of blood, is actually used to pump nutrients through their bodies via a ‘water vascular system.’

Also, Starfish move by using tiny tube feet located on the underside of their bodies. Adults can move at the astonishing speed of one meter per minute using 15,000 tube feet. Tube feet also help them hold their prey. If one of their arms is lost, they have the amazingly ability to regenerate it.

This is just a small part of why I say Myrtle Beach is one of the best vacation spots in the U.S. When we go here we do everything together as a family. My kids are older and we just don’t do things all together like we used to. There’s so much to do at Myrtle Beach, there’s somthing for every age. One time we went out for a Dolphin Cruise, which was just amazing. We even saw a baby dolphin! Afterwards, the Capt. of the boat took us to a spot where we could get off the boat and snorkle for sand dollars and whatever else we could find. The water was shallow and you could see the bottom from up on the boat. It was so fun!

 

 

Down by the boardwalk there’s a waterpark, an amusement park, shops, eateries, a few Ripley’s places to visit, a Zipline and a lot more. The Skywheel in the photo above, is 187 ft. tall!  None of us rode that. lol  Or you can just walk out on the pier or the boardwalk. We love going out on those long piers. You’re way out in the ocean and we always see people catching fish. Even baby sharks!
